That's all very well - but unless councils are then prepared to protect these areas when the likes of Thames Water come along, it counts for nothing. After all, when THESE houses were built, safe, open space WAS factored in and AVDC agreed a covenant to protect it.

Let's hope our councillors will see that to agree to TW's demands, would not only be a tragedy for THIS green but would undermine any future promises they make about being committed to providing safe places for children to play.local parentnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37136149.post-40847359095708413882008-04-05T12:58:00.000+01:002008-04-05T12:58:00.000+01:00Part of the safety of the green at the moment is t...Part of the safety of the green at the moment is that local children can play safely and independently on it. It is rare nowadays that children are allowed such freedom.

Ed Balls, Minister for Education, announced on Thursday that he wants to invest in the future of children of all ages by building or renovating children's play areas to encourage outside play and get children away from computer games.

He said

"It seems children spend less time playing outside than they would like and less than their parents did as children. Evidence shows around one in three parents will not allow children aged 8-15 to play outside of their home or garden, and as many as one in four children aged 8-10 have never played outside without an adult.Parents have told us that this is because there is not enough safe places to go".

A leading Child Psychologist said on the same news item that it was essential to a child's development to have unsupervised, independent play. To inhibit this could lead to a generation of children with low self-worth, who may not able to function as members of society because they have been involved in too much isolated play and of course, the buzz word of the moment, childhood obesity.

Our local children have been lucky enough to benefit from this type of independent play without adults having to sit out on the green, allowing them an extra degree of independence.

HOW CAN WE DO THIS IF THIS SCHEME IS ALLOWED TO GO AHEAD WHEN IT INVOLVES THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN?

What do others think?Local Residentnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37136149.post-7125316981224168962008-04-03T20:08:00.000+01:002008-04-03T20:08:00.000+01:00It was a wonderful afternoon with lots of enthusia...It was a wonderful afternoon with lots of enthusiasm by children and adults alike! Surely this shows TW, BCC and AVDC how much our Community green space is used and valued -how it brings the community, and not just from the houses around Daly Way, together which is something that is sadly lacking in society today.local residentnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37136149.post-49664766052982023872008-03-25T19:44:00.000Z2008-03-25T19:44:00.000ZI applaud the spontaneous community spirit of the ...I applaud the spontaneous community spirit of the people in organising games on this valuable green. The Community Cohesion, which the government is eagar to promote, I fear, will dissolve as the green will be lost to residents and visitors. As a Police Officer I can clearly compare the wonderful Cohesion displayed here with the areas of anti-social behaviour in the neighbourhoods for which I am responsible.
